Texas Opens Spring Practice With Manning at First Team; Evaluation Questions From 2025 Now Have a Live Setting to Answer Them
Manning returns with 22 starts and a new receiver target. The defense has eight starters back. Spring practice is the most honest diagnostic in college football.

The University of Texas opened spring practice this week with Arch Manning taking first-team snaps, beginning what figures to be the most scrutinized spring quarterback evaluation in college football entering 2026.
Manning enters his junior season having started 22 games for the Longhorns, producing performances that ranged from among the best in the country to constrained by scheme and circumstance in ways that made evaluation difficult. The evaluation community has not reached consensus on his ceiling, and spring practice is the first opportunity to gather new data in a controlled environment without the noise of a game week.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian has declined to characterize what the spring will look like schematically, noting that the program uses spring to evaluate rather than install. In practice, that means Manning will work through a varied menu of concepts — quick game, play-action, dropback passing in multiple structures — against a defense that returns eight of eleven starters from a unit that ranked in the top twenty in the country last year. The competition is genuine. Whether it produces clarity on the questions scouts have about Manning's deep accuracy under duress is what everyone is watching to find out.
The portal addition at receiver in February gives Manning a legitimate second option at the position for the first time since his first season. The early integration of that receiver — how quickly the chemistry develops in spring — will shape what the fall offense can actually do. An established number-two target changes what you can ask a quarterback to do on any given play, because it changes what defenses have to account for on every snap.
Manning's 2026 season is already being framed as a definitive statement on his college career. The spring sets the narrative. The evaluation clock is running, and it started this week in Austin.
