Atlanta Acquires Tua Tagovailoa, GM Says He Will 'Compete' With Michael Penix Jr. for Starting Role

Ian Cunningham's one-word framing — 'compete' — is doing significant work. Penix was a first-round pick told he was the franchise's quarterback. That word lands differently inside the building.

The Atlanta Falcons acquired quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on Friday, and GM Ian Cunningham confirmed that Tagovailoa will "compete" with second-year starter Michael Penix Jr. for the starting role in 2026.

The acquisition — the specific mechanism, whether trade or free agent signing, was still being confirmed at deadline — brings to Atlanta a quarterback who was among the league's most efficient passers in 2023 and 2024 before health issues complicated his final two seasons in Miami. The Dolphins moved on from Tagovailoa at the start of free agency, with Malik Willis subsequently signing in Miami.

Penix, the eighth overall pick in the 2024 draft, started all 17 regular season games for Atlanta in 2025, going 9-8 and leading the Falcons to a wild card berth before a first-round exit. His downfield passing numbers were among the better ones produced by a second-year quarterback in recent memory. How the organization frames the "competition" — and what it actually means for Penix's development and role — will be the central question of Atlanta's spring program.

Cunningham's public framing of the Tagovailoa acquisition as a competition rather than a coronation is notable. It leaves organizational flexibility. It also places Penix, who was drafted as the franchise's long-term answer, in an unusual position for a player with his draft position and one productive NFL season behind him.

The Falcons' offensive coordinator, Mike LaFleur, has built a system around Penix's strengths — vertical concepts, downfield timing routes, one-on-one matchup exploitation. Whether that system will be modified to accommodate Tagovailoa's preference for quick game and pre-snap motion is an open question that spring practice will begin to answer.
