NFC East Day One: Eagles Hold on Brown, Dallas Tags Pickens Officially, Washington Active, Giants Methodical

Patriots are the frontrunner for A.J. Brown but haven't met Philadelphia's price. Pickens extension remains unresolved. Four franchises, four very different offseason postures.

The NFC East entered the new league year with more organizational activity than any other division in the first hours of official signings, and the distribution of that activity reflects the four very different roster situations that Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, and New York are managing.

Philadelphia's situation remains the most complex. The Eagles enter the new league year holding a receiver who has reportedly asked for a trade, under contract through 2029, while simultaneously evaluating what the open market offers. The Eagles did not move A.J. Brown before or at the start of the new league year — a deliberate signal, sources suggest, that the organization does not feel pressure to resolve the situation on anyone else's timeline. The asking price remains a 2027 first-round pick and a 2026 second, a package that has stalled every conversation so far. The New England Patriots, who have Mike Vrabel's relationship with Brown from their Tennessee days together, are considered the most active pursuer but have not met that price.

Dallas converted the George Pickens franchise tag to an official designation with the start of the new league year, preserving the organization's options while the extension conversation continues. The Cowboys enter the new year with Pickens under control for 2026 and a significant decision about his long-term structure still unresolved. How that extension goes will define Dallas's cap flexibility for the next three seasons.

Washington, with Dan Quinn entering his third offseason, was active in the window's final hours and converted multiple agreements into official contracts in the first wave Wednesday afternoon. The Commanders are operating with genuine cap space and a defined organizational identity after back-to-back competitive seasons.

The New York Giants were the most deliberate of the four NFC East franchises in the first day's activity. Their offseason approach under their new staff reflects a methodical rebuilding philosophy — the recognition that sustainable competitive windows are built over multiple cycles, not acquired in a single free-agent period. The first day's activity is consistent with that posture.
