Every player who signs somewhere this week — every lineman who picks a team, every receiver who finds a new home, every linebacker who decides to chase a ring instead of a bigger contract — is going to show up to a new building for the first time in his professional life and have to prove something. That proving is what the next eight months are about. The proving is what training camp is about. The proving is what the first week of the season, when the schedule gets announced and the games get circled, is about.

I love this time of year for that reason. There is no team in the league right now that isn't genuinely better than it was yesterday in someone's imagination. Every front office in the building believes they're going to make decisions this week that change the direction of their program. Some of them are right. That's the part nobody knows yet.

Here's what I want you to watch for in the next forty-eight hours.

The receiver market is going to produce a signing that surprises people. There's always one. A player who the media consensus had going somewhere obvious ends up somewhere unexpected, and then everyone reconstrues the logic as obvious in retrospect. It isn't obvious in advance. That's what makes it fun.

The interior offensive linemen who sign this week are going to matter more than the tackles. I know that sounds backward. Stay with me. The tackles protect the edge. The guards and centers protect the inside. The inside is where quarterbacks are actually getting hit right now. The guard who signs for a little less than the top tackle this week and gives his quarterback clean pockets in October is going to matter more for his team's success. Find that guy and watch what he does when the season starts.

And then there's Indiana's pro day today, where Fernando Mendoza threw in front of the largest scout gathering that school has seen in years. Word from scouts who were there is that Mendoza was precise, composed, and threw with conviction on the deep ball in ways that his combine week was deliberately careful not to show. The draft is going to be interesting.

The window is open. The season is coming. Football is always right around the corner.
